The Philadelphia 76ers rookie, VJ Edgecombe, had a historic night with 30 points, and 10 rebounds, not letting the injury from a hard fall on his back early in the game to get in his way. He becomes the first rookie to record at least 30 PTS and 10 REB since Tim Duncan on May 5, 1998. Tyrese Maxey put up 29 points and the 76ers beat the Celtics 111-97 in Boston to tie the series (PHI-BOS: 1-1).
The Boston Celtics star-players, Jaylen Brown (36 PTS, 7 REB, 4 AST) and Jayson Tatum, combined for 55 points, while Tatum finished the game with a near triple-double (19 PTS, 14 REB, 9 AST). However, the duo were the only Celtics players to score in double-digits. Boston was desperate for other players to step-up, though Philadelphia's suffocating defense did not allow pluralism in offense for the hosts.
The misfire cost Celtics the game as they were 13 of 47 from the 3-point line and shot just 39.3% from the field overall. On the other hand, 76ers scored 19 of 37 from the 3-pt line and made 47.8% from the field.
Jaylen Brown in his post-game interview acknowledged VJ Edgecombe heroics. "I thought Edgecombe was just too comfortable. He's a rookie, but he can play. We've got to be better on him," Brown said.
The 76ers are still playing without Joel Embiid who continues to go through strength a rehabilitation programme after an appendectomy on April 9.
The Celtics VS 76ers series continues in Philadelphia for Game 3 in Friday.
